for the 2012 election. welcome to american live i'm shannon bream in for megyn kelly. vice president joe biden said america has turned a corner. president obama asked voters to hang on and give him a second term. some 368,000 americans just quit hanging on and completely gave up looking for work last month. the august jobs report shows only 96,000 jobs were added to our economy last month. that's a whole lot less than expected. the unemployment rate fell to 8.1%, moving in the right direction but only because so many people gave up looking for work. only 63% of working-age adults are in the workforce, that is the lowest level since 1981. translates to nearly 9 million able-bodnear nearly 9 million able body deed adults not getting a paycheck. back then 275 jobs were ordered. it slumped to 245,000 in june. august 96,000. this news comes as the candidates kick their general election campaigns into high gear. we are waiting for reaction from president obama, he's in the key battle state of new hampshire speaking at this hourment he's been talking for a few minutes but has yet to mention the job r

house. so, what's at the top of obama's to-do list for the democratic convention? shannon travis joins us live from charlotte. shannon, first of all, really weird news. we're hearing about a theft on the campaign trail today. what do you know about this? >> reporter: yeah, this is a pretty bizarre incident that we're just getting word of, gary. apparently, a u-haul truck containing equipment for an event featuring joe biden tomorrow in detroit, this u-haul truck was stolen. that's coming from the u.s. secret service. i'm going to read just a quote from a spokesman -- "a u-haul that we were utilizing was stolen at the weston hotel overnight." that's from ed donovan with the secret service. they are not saying what was actually inside the truck, so we're unclear about that, but the secret service representative is saying this shouldn't interfere with biden's event tomorrow in downtown detroit. >> that's an unusual development. we don't hear that very much. let's talk, shannon, about what expectations barack obama needs to meet at the democratic convention. >> reporter: yeah, in a lot of

to the news surrounding these events? let's go to correspondent shannon bream for more. >> late tuesday, g.o.p. nominee mitt romney released a statement calling the administration's initial response to the attacks in egypt disgraceful. they appeared to, quote, sympathize with those that waged the attacks. it came in the response of an embassy statement which hillary clinton had reportedly rejected and senator officials say the white house never approved. yet despite the distance the administration to want it between it and embassy statement only romney seems to be taking the heat for criticizing it. >> the statement looks tone deaf in this light. >> reporter: they called romney's statement, unwise and inaccurate and unpresidential. >> the president's policies in the middle east should be the big story. how are the president's policies affecting what is happening over there. instead it's mitt romney's problem. >> reporter: just before romney faced the press to take questions reporters could be heard conferring with each other. >> i would say regret to your question, i mean your statement no

the country by next week. shannon has our report. the president's poll numbers in ohio getting a boost from stronger economic numbers, but there's head winds pressuring the campaign. the white house chief correspondent, ed henry, reports. >> since early voting starts tuesday here in ohio, it was a familiar script for president obama on his 29th visit to the buckeye state hitting yet another university, this time bowling green to exploit young voters. >> october 2nd, just six days from now, you get to start voting. >> the president is benefiting this the state's unemployment rate being a point lower than the national average. on the issue that's supposed to be republican mitt romney's strength, the economy, he's trailing the president with a "new york times" news poll showing on the question of who can better handle it, ohio voters give the president an edge of 51% to 45%. >> i woke up every day doing everything i can to give american workers a fair shot in the global economy. >> there's danger signs. they declared ceos see slower economic growth the rest of the year with lower expectations

finishing touches on the convention. it all gets going tuesday. cnn political producer shannon travis is in charlotte, north carolina this afternoon. shannon, are people trickling in already besides the media, such as yourself? >> yeah. i mean, mostly the media presence is growing and growing since yesterday when we arrived but you're absolutely right. they are some of the delegates, some of the dnc officials that have started to come in, probably picking up their cars and securing their hotel rooms before things get too crazy. i think the bulk of people will be coming in tomorrow, fred. also tomorrow we expect for the security perimeter that will secure basically the entire zone surrounding this arena where the dnc will kick off on tuesday. that will be going up tomorrow afternoon we expect so a few more headaches getting around then as well. a lot of preparations are going on. a lot of people are filing in. pretty much yesterday and today, fred. >> okay. quite a few celebrities are kind of on the roster to speak or at least be in attendance. who are they as far as you know? >> yeah.
. are the democrats being dishonest with voters? shannon is in washington with a look at that. >>shannon: it is in surprise that speakers at the democratic national convention are touting the president's record while criticizing governor romney. so, let's check the facts. in the speech, current massachusetts governor patrick went after romney's record as governor of that state. >> in massachusetts we know mitt romney. by the time he left office massachusetts was 47th in the nation in job creation during better economic times and household income in our state was declining. >> the truth is, massachusetts was in 50th position when romney took over as governor, during the time in office unemployment went down and was modest jobs gain. when he left office, massachusetts was 28th. the same flight, the san antonio mayor castro talked about job creation under president obama. >> four years ago, america stood on the brink of a depression. despite incredible odds and united republican opposition our president took action and now we have seen 4.5 million new jobs. >> according to the bureau of lab
